GEARS

Spur gear

A gear wheel having radial teeth parallel to the axle is called the spur gear. Spur gears are by far the most common type of gear and with the exceptions of the "cog" the type of gear that has been around the longest.Spur gears have teeth that run perpendicular to the face of the gear.

Helical gear

Helical gears can also be used on non-parallel shafts to transmit motion.
Helical gears tend to run quieter and smoother than spur gears due to the increased number of teeth in constant contact at any one period of time.

Helical-bevel gear

Helical bevel gear is a toothed gear in angular design. The input side is provided with a motor flange or a free input shaft and the output side are provided with a free shaft end or a hollow shaft. Helical bevel gears are fitted with flanges of various sizes. Reciprocating tools cut them.

CYCLOIDAL GEAR

Cycloidal gear is a popular type of gear which is in the form of toothed gear and widely used in mechanical clocks. Cycloidal gears are used in pairs and are set at an angle of 180 degrees used to balance the load and are driven by multiple crank shafts to share the load and increase torsion rigidity. The cycloidal gear mesh with a large quantity of precisely ground steel pins. The combined tooth contact area of the two cycloidal gears and pins ensures that the load is distributed almost entirely around the pitch circle.

DIFFERENTIAL GEAR

Differential gears link two shafts with a covering, forcing the total of the rotational angles of the shafts to be the same as the rotational angles of the covering. Arrangement of the system is done in such a way that one axle turns faster than the other.

FACE GEAR

Face gears transmit power at (usually) right angles in a circular motion. Face gears are not very common in industrial application.

GIRTH GEAR

Girth gears are very popular type of gears used in various industrial applications. One of the important component in the entire gear drive assembly, the basic feature of girth gears which differentiate them from other gears is that they are made in multiple segments, which can be of two, four or eight equal sizes. They are also known as Split ring gears/ Split rings among industrial users.

Application of Girth Gears
The girth gear is the heart of most mills and kiln drive system. They can't be used in spare parts inventory. They are also used in steel industry, sugar industry, paper and pulp industry.

HERRINGBONE GEAR

Herringbone gears resemble two helical gears that have been placed side by side. They are often referred to as "double helicals".

IDLEAR GEAR

Idler gears is a gear wheel placed between two other gears to transmit motion from one to the other. It does not alter the speed of the output, but it does alter the direction it turns. It is used to ensure that the rotation of two gears is the same. An idler gear is placed between two gears. The idler gear rotates in the opposite direction as the driver gear, and the follower gear rotates in the opposite direction of the idler, the same direction of the driver. It is also used to change the spacing between the input and output axles. It does not change the gear ratio between the input and output gears.

INVOLUTE GEARS

Involute gears have a tooth shape that is tolerant of variations in the distance between the axes, to ensure smooth running of the gears. The velocity ratio of the gears does not depend on the exact spacing of the axes, but is fixed by the number of teeth or by pitch diameters. Increasing the distance above its theoretical value makes the gears run easier, since the clearances are larger. This also increases the backlash. Rack type cutters generate involute gears.

PLANETARY GEARS

Planetary gears are a set of gears usually two or more on or inside a larger gear. They make drastic gear ratio possible. They are used when one wishes to turn the input in the same direction as the output. The gear in the center of the larger gear, called the sun engages two or three smaller gears placed in the same large gear. These small gears are called planet and they are engaged to the inside of the large gear called the ring. Planetary gears turn on movable center and the sun gears turn on a fixed center.

Advantages of Planetary Gears

Planetary gear trains have several advantages such as follows:
* They have higher gear ratios.
* They are popular for automatic transmissions in automobiles.
* They are also used in bicycles for controlling power of pedaling automatically or manually.
* They are also used for power train between internal combustion engine and an electric motor.

SPRIAL BEVEL GEAR

Spiral bevel gears have spiral angles, which give performance improvements. They are designed for an angle change of 90 degrees, where the two axes are concurrent and in the same plane. These gears have a double function of being helical and beveled at the same time. The contact between the teeth starts at one end of the gear and then spreads across the whole tooth. In this type of gears the shaft must be perpendicular to each other and must be in the same plane.

WINCH GEAR

Winch gears are used to convert the high speed, low force input of the handle into low speed, high torque output at the drum. These are quite highly developed and use tooth forms that are significantly different from those found in other gear applications such as car gearboxes and power transmission.

WORM GEAR

A short rotating screw that meshes with the teeth of another gear. As a worm gear is an inclined plane, it will be the driving gear in most cases ( THE LAW OF THE WORM! ).
